Elvetia

The mulled wine and winter sports season is getting closer. In fact, it’s already winter in Switzerland. The mountains are covered in snow, and just as expected, Switzerland’s slopes and mountain resorts are waiting for tourists with open arms. That’s why I thought I’d present you our top picks of the Best Ski Resorts in Switzerland…in case you’re looking for a more special place for your winter holiday.

Zermatt

Zermatt is not only a perfect destination for winter sports, but I’d say it’s the place you need to see at least once in your life. Without a doubt, Zermatt is the most beautiful village in Switzerland, a village that is a Winter Wonderland in winter.

The idyllic village of Zermat lies at the foot of the Matterhorn, and from some of the ski slopes, you can enjoy a fantastic view of the mountain. After an intense day on the highest ski slopes in the Alps, you can return to the village for a romantic igloo dinner, a day at the spa or a fondue tasting. One day you can take the train to Gornergrat for breathtaking views.

How do you get to Zermatt?

As a car-free zone, you can only get to Zermatt by train from Täsch. The train journey takes 12 minutes and costs 8.20CHF. There are many car parks in the Tasch station area, with prices starting at 3CHF/hour. Täsch is 214 km from Switzerland’s largest cities (Zurich, Geneva, Basel), at approx. 3-4 hours drive.

The highest winter sports area in the Alps, Zermatt has ski slopes at altitudes between 2,500 and 3,900 metres, with over 2,133 metres of vertical drop – the highest in Switzerland.

Grindelwald

Grindelwald is located in the Jungfrau region of the Berner Oberland. This region is known for its spectacular mountain scenery, fairytale villages, 800 lakes and around 300 km of ski slopes. The Berner Oberland is one of our favourite areas in Switzerland for two big reasons: 1) Spectacular landscapes best define scenic Switzerland; 2) There are plenty of places to see and plenty of activities to do, both in summer and winter.

How do you get to Grindelwald?

Grindelwald is 130 km from Zurich (approx. 2 hours by car).

Flims – Laax

Films-Laax is a very popular ski resort among locals. Films and Laax are two villages located in the Vorab Gletscher valley, near the tectonic zone and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sardona. On the other side, Flims and Laax are bordered by the Rhine valley (the Rhine Gorges are only a few km away). Flims and Laax are two of the most famous ski resorts in Canton Graubünden, with a total of 200 km of slopes at altitudes of over 1800 m.

How do you get to Flims/Laax?

Flims is 138 km from Zurich (approx. 1h30 by car). From Milan, Flims is 222 km (approx. 3 h by car).

What can you do and see in Flims?

If you plan to spend several days in Flims-Laax, it would be a shame to spend them all on the ski slopes. I would advise you to take the opportunity to discover other beautiful places in the region.

Near Flims you can visit Lake Cauma and the Rhine Gorge. In December, you can spend a few hours at the Christmas fair in Chur/Cuira. St. Moritz is an hour and a half drive away, making it perfect for a day trip. Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, would be another option for a short trip. If you still want to relax, I recommend the thermal baths in Bad Ragaz, a village renowned for its thermal baths and luxurious hotels. SkiPass – Prices for Flims-Laax: from 55 CHF/person/day (more info…)
