Alberobello is by far one of the most famous and pretty villages in Italy, and a city break in Bari wouldn’t be complete without a half-day trip to the village of the most adorable cottages. Even the name “trulli”, as these cottages are called, tells you that this village is truly special. We visited Alberobello on an extremely hot day, took a short walk through Rione dei Monti, a UNESCO World Heritage part of the village, and tried, as much as the weather allowed, to enjoy the story that Alberobello tells. So, I thought it would be a good idea to post a short guide to Alberobello.

How to organize a trip to Alberobello (from Bari) – short guide to Alberobello

If I told you we wanted to go to Bari for anything other than Alberobello, I’d be lying! Alberobello was the one that put Bari on our list (everyone’s list?), which is why on day number 2 we showed up again at the train station to pick up our bus tickets to Italy’s fairytale village.

We were so keen to see the wonderful cottages – the turlli cottages – that we’d read about being built nowadays (how cool would it be to build our own!), that we forgot to take a look at the weather forecast. We boarded the bus, let our eyes be captured by the images on the road, and got off, a wave of heat took our breath away. But we got ambitious, walked for a few minutes until we reached Rione dei Monti. We were exhausted from the heat and already starting to see everything in a haze. It was 42 degrees outside, and the wind blowing was so hot I felt like my skin was burning.

From Bari to Alberobello by bus/car/train

Car

If you plan to explore the whole region, then I recommend renting a car. With a car you will easily reach many historic villages and places less frequented by tourists. Between Bari and Alberobello there is a distance of 55 km, which can be covered in less than an hour.

Further on, from Alberobello, you can easily reach Monopoli or Martina Franca.

Train

Unfortunately, there is no direct train between Alberobello and Bari. The only option is to travel by two trains: Bari – Putignano and Putignano-Alberobello. The train journey is quite long (about 2 h 30) and costs on average 5 euro.

Bus

The easiest and cheapest option! There are many local buses that leave from Bari (Largo Sorrentino station) and make a stop in Alberobello. The Largo Sorrentino station is located behind the train station in Bari, opposite the station entrance. Tickets can be purchased either online (link here) or from the machines at the station.

A trip costs €4.30 and takes 1 hour and 5-10 minutes.

Accomodation

In terms of accommodation, we chose to base ourselves in Bari at the Hotel Cristal***.The hotel we stayed at was not perfect, but it was clean – linen was changed every day, it was cheap (we paid 35 euro/night in high season) and it was relatively ok in terms of location (10 minute walk to the central train station and another 15 minute walk to Bari Vecchia).

A great idea, which we’ll put into practice if we ever get to Puglia again, would be to rent a trulli cottage. Tourism in Alberobello has blossomed, and those who want to experience living in a trulli house can easily do so by booking a trulli cottage on Booking or Airbnb.
